Ursa Major II

Ursa Major II

Ursa Major II, a diminutive and ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, was first identified in 2006 by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey within the constellation Ursa Major. Positioned approximately 32 kiloparsecs from the Sun, Ursa Major II exhibits characteristics typical of such small galactic systems, including low luminosity, a modest size, and a stellar population dominated by old, metal-poor stars. Its distance from Earth makes precise measurements challenging, but its status as an ultra-faint dwarf implies a limited mass. Ursa Major II, like many of its counterparts, is believed to be enveloped in dark matter, adding to its significance in the study of galactic dynamics.
