Asteroid 48 Doris, discovered on September 19, 1857, by the Italian astronomer Hermann Goldschmidt, is a member of the asteroid belt situated between Mars and Jupiter. Named after Doris, a sea nymph in Greek mythology and the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, this asteroid has an estimated diameter of approximately 93 kilometers (58 miles). Doris orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 339 million kilometers (211 million miles), completing its orbit in approximately 4.1 Earth years.
