Dactyl

Dactyl

Dactyl is the first confirmed natural satellite of the asteroid 243 Ida, discovered on August 17, 1993, by the Galileo spacecraft during its flyby of the asteroid. This moonlet is relatively tiny compared to Ida, measuring approximately 1.4 kilometers in its longest dimension. Dactyl's discovery was a historic moment as it marked the first sighting of a natural satellite around an asteroid. Its existence provided astronomers with essential information about the complexities of asteroidal systems and the potential prevalence of smaller bodies orbiting asteroids.
