Himalia

Himalia

Himalia is a Jovian moon with a unique history and characteristics. Discovered in 1904 by American astronomer Charles Dillon Perrine, it is one of Jupiter's irregular moons. Himalia has an estimated diameter of about 170 kilometers (105 miles) and follows a distant and eccentric orbit around Jupiter. Its irregular shape and relatively large size compared to other irregular moons set it apart. Himalia is a member of the "Himalia Group," which consists of moons with similar orbital characteristics. While little is known about its surface features or composition due to its distance from Earth, its reddish hue suggests the presence of organic compounds on its surface. Himalia's origin is thought to be the result of captured asteroids or fragments from larger celestial bodies. Its intriguing status as an irregular moon contributes to our understanding of the complex interactions that have shaped the Jovian moon system over time.
