Hyrrokkin

Hyrrokkin

Hyrrokkin, classified as an irregular moon of Saturn, belongs to the Norse group of satellites. Its discovery in 2004, facilitated by observations from the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, led to its name being drawn from Norse mythology—a giantess who played a role in launching Baldr's funeral ship. Hyrrokkin's irregular orbit, characterized by its eccentric and inclined trajectory, distinguishes it from Saturn's larger regular moons that orbit closer to the planet's equatorial plane. As part of the Norse group, alongside moons like Skathi and Greip, Hyrrokkin shares similar orbital characteristics, hinting at a potential shared origin, possibly through the fragmentation of a larger moon. Yet, due to its considerable distance from Earth and the scarcity of observational data, crucial details about Hyrrokkin's physical attributes, including its size, composition, and surface features, remain obscured. It is believed that Hyrrokkin, similar to other irregular moons, was captured by Saturn's gravitational pull, likely originating from the outer solar system.
