Pandora

Pandora was discovered in 1980 through images captured by Voyager 1 and named after the mythological figure associated with a fabled box. Measuring approximately 81 kilometers in diameter, Pandora displays an irregular shape and a surface marked by craters, likely comprised of water ice and common icy materials found in Saturn's moon system. Positioned just beyond the F Ring, Pandora operates as a "shepherd moon," influencing the dynamics of the F Ring through its gravitational interactions. Its partnership with Prometheus shapes the F Ring's structure, leading to scalloped edges, gaps, and other disruptions within the ring material. Cassini's mission provided invaluable insights into Pandora's attributes, including its surface features and its collaborative role in defining the F Ring's characteristics.
